Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women
1 in 8 women
will develop breast cancer in her lifetime
4 women
die from it everyday in Quebec
which represents, every year,
1 380 deaths
The Problem
Currently, access to screening (and therefore to mammograms) is based on one single factor: age. In Quebec, only women aged 50 to 74 can get mammograms thanks to the Québec Breast Cancer Screening Program.
The reality is alarming:
Nearly 1 in 6 cancers is detected in women under 50.
16%
Among women in their twenties, the number of cases has increased by 45%.
45%
Age alone should not be considered. The science is unequivocal: family history, breast density, hormone exposure, body mass index and lifestyle all influence the risk of developing breast cancer.
What if we modernized screening to take every woman’s individual risk into account? What if this service was available to the entire population?
An Innovative Solution
That’s the idea behind the PERSPECTIVE research project.
Thanks to this initiative, a revolutionary tool was developed: a saliva test combined with a short questionnaire that can be used to assess each woman’s individual risk level, from low to high.
The Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation (QBCF), thanks to generous donations from Quebecers, is first in line to financially support this unique project. Its objective:
- Modernize screening.
- Adapt follow-up according to actual risk.
- Provide fair access to all women, regardless of their age.
